日本の「ＣＧデザイナー」という呼び名は時代遅れ？(08/29/2008)
日本のＣＧ現場で定着している「ＣＧデザイナー」という肩書き。しかし、これは英語圏では全く使用されていない和製英語である事をご存知だろうか。
最先端を行くハリウッドでは、もはや「ＣＧ」の２文字を肩書きには使用しない傾向にあり、「ＣＧデザイナー」という名前は時代遅れとなりつつある。
そこで、ハリウッドのＶＥＳがこの程発表した「ジョブ･タイトル・ガイドライン」を参考に、これからの我々の肩書きがどうあるべきかをご紹介してみたい。
筆者が10数年前、日本のＣＧプロダクションで働いていた当時、肩書きは「ＣＧデザイナー」であった。
普段は何気なくこの肩書きを名乗っていたが、就職面接の際にアメリカ人の面接官からこう尋ねられた事があった。
「ＣＧデザイナー…？これはどんな仕事ですか？あなたは、２Ｄのコンセプト･アーティストですか？」
この時「ＣＧデザイナー」という肩書きが、海外では使用されていないのだという事を、初めて学んだ。あれから早や10年以上が過ぎようとしているが、日本の現場では、未だにこの肩書きが蔓延している。
今や、日本の映像作品が海外のフェスティバルや映画祭にどんどん出ていく時代となったが、我々が使用している肩書きは旧態依然として、誤った「和製英語」の肩書きが使用され続けている。
さて、これを日本の皆さんにどうやって伝えたものだろうか…筆者がそう考えてあぐねていた矢先、ハリウッドの全米視覚効果協会ＶＥＳ[Visual Effects Society]が、映画のスタッフクレジットに掲載されるジョブ･タイトルのガイドラインを公布した。
ハリウッドがこのようなガイト・ラインを出しているのだから、我々も肩書きについて再考する時期に来ているのかもしれない。そこで今回は、この件についてみなさんにご紹介してみたいと思う。
筆者が日頃、ハリウッドで仕事をしていて感じる事は、英語圏では"ＣＧ"の２文字は基本的にジョブ･タイトルには含めない、という事が主流になっているという事だろう。
これには、もはやＣＧが特別な物ではなくなり、わざわざ表記するまでもないという実情がある。これを分かり易く例えると、会社員の名刺にわざわざ「会社員」と書かれていないのと同じと言えるだろう。
ジョブ･タイトルに「ＣＧ」がつくのは、せいぜいスーパーバイザー位で、ほかのポジションにそれが見当たらない。
アメリカの現場は分業制が進んでいる事もあり、それよりも「何を担当しているのか」で明確に区分けする傾向が見られる。
しかし、ハリウッドと言えども、小規模のＶＦＸスタジオは日本の現場と同じく、１人で「ＡからＺまで」を全て担当するスタイルを取っている事も珍しくない。こういうジェネラリストの肩書きは"Digital Artist"と表記する。
これが、我々が日頃使用している「ＣＧデザイナー」に置き換えるのに、最も近い肩書きである。
また、分業制を敷いている会社でも、この"Digital Artist"という肩書きを殆どのアーティストに使用しているスタジオもある。ハリウッドのＶＦＸスタジオ大手、デジタル･ドメインはその最たる例である。
もう１つ、是非忘れずに述べておきたい、日本の現場での誤った肩書きの代表格がある。
それは「プロダクション・マネージャー」である。日本ではＰＭ、プロマネとも呼ばれ、制作進行などを指す肩書きとして浸透しているが、実はこれ、英語圏では「制作部長クラスを指す肩書き」なのである。
アメリカ人が日本のプロダクションに電話をして"Production Manager"に繋いでもらったら、英語も話せない新人が出てきたという話も実際に耳にした事があり、もはや見過ごせないレベルの誤りとして認識していくべきであろう。
日本で新入社員の名刺に「部長」「課長」と書くと違和感や対外的な問題が生じるが、それと同じレベルの誤りを我々は何気なく犯しているという事なのだ。これは改めるべきであろう。
ちなみに、この場合、英語圏ではどういう肩書きで呼んでいるかと言えば、「プロダクション･アシスタント」か「プロダクション・コーディネーター」が正しい。
さて、それでは、ＶＥＳが発表したガイドラインの一例を見てみる事にしよう。

一度業界で浸透してしまった肩書きや、誤りを正していくのは簡単ではないが、時間を掛けて補正していく事で、必ず改善出来ると筆者は確信している。
特に、この「改革」をお願いしたいのは、業界に大きな影響力を持つ、大手・著名プロダクションの皆様に対してである。
大手各社が誤った使い方をしていると、業界はそれに追従してしまう傾向がある。
大手・著名プロダクションが率先して正しいジョブ･タイトルを使用し、１つ１つの問題を解決していく事で、近い将来国際的にも通用する仕事に繋がるのでないだろうか。
その第一歩として、これを実践して頂ければ嬉しく思う。
